Last year, I went to Hoof it Galena with my sister-in-law and wanted to go again. So this year, I had my friend Sally join me for this day trip. The first stop would be Hoof it, they are located just outside of Galena. Before you go, you reserve, pay, and sign a waiver online. The hike with the goats is relaxing. There was plenty of shade even though it was hot that day. I was happy to see Butch, one of my favorite goats, again. There were storms coming in, so we didn't stay and moved on to the next stop, U.S. Grant's home. I know I went as a kid, but I was interested in seeing it again, especially after reading Ron Chernow's book about Grant. The tour is $5 per person; no reservations are required. The books in the library are from the Grant family, and 90% of the furnishings are original. The home was given to the Grants for his fine service in the Civil War. Next stop was lunch, and not a moment too soon. We decided on Charlie's Place, and the storm hit about 5 minutes after we walked in. They serve breakfast and lunch until 2:00 pm. The food and service were great. The storm cleared, and we did some shopping in the unique shops on the way back to the car. My favorite stops are the Galena Book and Paper and Root Beer Revelry. The bookstore has a great selection and is independently owned. Root Beer Revelry, you can try a flight of root beer, have a root beer float, and purchase a variety of root beers to take home. I made sure to get some Petosi and 1919. There is so much to do, but we decided to call it a day so that we wouldn't get caught in a later storm.
