Andy Griffith comes alive at Mount Airy, North Carolina on the way to the Junior Olympics in 2019

In 2019 I went with Mom and Dad to Greensboro, North Carolina to see Josie, Esther, Russell and Bella compete in the AAU Junior Olympics.  Here is a peak into the second day of our trip to Greensboro.  Once you are in West Virginia you start seeing mountains and they are very lush with trees.  The mountains continue to get larger as you head further east and south.  As we started the second day of travel we stopped at the Virginia visitor center and I got some information about the Blue Ridge Parkway and Wytheville, Virginia.

We stopped in Wytheville, Virginia to see the big pencil and the mural of the life of First Lady Edith Bolling Wilson.  It was a cute town with several things to see but many things were closed because it was Sunday.

At Fancy Gap, Virginia we got off of the interstate to head to Mount Airy, North Carolina.  Along the way there were some fruit and vegetable stands.  We stopped at one and the guy gave us samples of the peaches. Wow, they were delicious.  Dad got some peaches and I bought some boiled peanuts.  This would be my first time to try them and they were alright basically just a soft peanut like a pinto bean.  I prefer fresh because I like the crunch.  They had some beautiful tomatoes that made us all hungry for blt sandwiches.

We went to the visitor center in Mount Airy and got some information on where all the Andy Griffith stuff was located.  We were able to walk down Main St. to see most everything.  There was Barney’s, Walker’s Soda Fountain, Floyd’s Barber, Opie’s Candy Store, Snappy Lunch and many shops with souvenirs.  We then drove to Wally’s Service Station.  That was a great stop!  I got in the cop car. They had a replica of the courthouse and jail.  The best part was you could sit at the desk and go into the cells.  We then drove to the museum and took a picture of the statue of Andy and Opie.  The museum was getting ready to close.  Again it was Sunday so some things were closed, but overall we saw most everything.  I would go back and make a more detailed plan to eat at the Snappy Lunch, go into Floyd’s, ride in the cop car and then tour the Andy Griffith museum.

Now we drove to the town of Pilot Mountain.  If you watch the Andy Griffith show you should remember that Mount Pilot was the neighboring town to Mayberry.  Pilot Mountain is a town in which Andy modeled Mayberry for the show.  His last name on the show was his mother’s maiden name.  According to the lady at Wally’s Service there is a small town (probably unincorporated) Mayberry on the Blue Ridge Parkway at the Virginia/North Carolina border and that is where Andy Griffith’s Mom was born.

Mom, Dad and I had a great time.  The ice cream we had was delicious.
